Professional and experiencing burnout?
Through the years I have attended workshops on Burnout, Vicarious Trauma and Compassion Fatigue.
It felt good to be acknowledged that this may be a problem and it was good to be educated about it however I still was not able to prevent the burnout I felt or the compassion fatigue symptoms.
I was emotionally and physically exhausted a lot of the time.
The crisis worker, advocate, and law enforcement professional pay a price for doing work where they hear difficult stories daily and are exposed to traumatic details.
What is the impact of continual crisis work on the emotional, physical, personal and spiritual life of an individual?
There is a book I discovered recently that is a good read on the “Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement“, by Kevin M. Gilmarton, Ph.D. It is a guide to help the law enforcement officer overcome the internal assaults they experience both personally and professionally over the course of their careers. I think the lessons in the book are good ones and can be applied to any job that are similar.
It stands to reason that there is a huge impact on advocates, law enforcement or any crisis worker to how their world view changes. I think any stressful job has these effects.
I went on a journey for self care many years ago due to knowing my world view had changed as well as being physically and emotionally exhausted most of the time. It was costing me in my relationships and quality of life. I also had many physical complaints and pain.
I had to find a way to relax and let go of the trauma I picked up on a daily basis.
I needed to find a way to deal with the constant triggers and relax and enjoy life.
I really had no rest as my body was in constant fight or flight mode.
I tried many non traditional methods like meditation, sound healing and Reiki. I was a huge exerciser for many years.
These do work in reducing your stress and I recommend to find your own way to relax as it is imperative you do so for your own self care.
Then I discovered EFT which was by accident but they do say that nothing is by accident. So I explored this and discovered that my anxiety was relieved very quickly, was sleeping better and felt better over all.
I also discovered that in places in which I was overreacting to life events I was naturally letting go.
I was able to speak up more completely, honestly and calmly during normally uncomfortable conversations.
Then I decided to work with others just like myself who are in professional jobs that are in the helping professions and need help to relax and start looking at their own self care needs. Professional people like myself who are balancing stressful jobs, home life, illness, finances and community life. I know it is costing them in their finances, emotions, relationships, physical ailments and spiritual life.
I conducted a group workshop recently with a group of highly stressed professionals and just working with them for at least 10 minutes I could see their faces relaxing. This was just in 10 minutes!
They reported less pain, lightness in the body, and less stress. How cool is that?
Using EFT is a way for Professionals to decease stress, improve outlook, increase energy, feel better, and live happy, healthier lives.
